Conceptual and Detailed Design Development

Basis of Design (BOD) / Conceptual Design

GPS’ Basis of Design (BOD) phase aligns our clients’ corporate standards, preferred products and industry proven practices with project requirements to formulate a best value BOD foundation for the project. This process includes:

  • Creating a schematic design with clear, concise sketches, graphics, general design criteria and preliminary cost estimates
  • Defining construction requirements including space and pathways, power draw and heat loads, room and wall construction, floor type and ceiling finishes (i.e,. static dissipative, clean, hard deck, raised floor, lighting)
  • Determining all network parameters for the design, including number of outlet locations, number and type of subnets, size of backbone and spare capacity
  • Determining the site’s required level of redundancy based on client needs and mission critical requirements
  • Developing technical specification and initial AutoCAD drawings for review with client

Detailed Design Development (Design/Engineering)

The Detailed Design development phase produces deliverables for the GPS client that include detailed design drawings, specifications and budgetary estimates for the project bid/tender. Siemon GPS performs the necessary due-diligence to define all aspects of the cable plant installation, integration with other disciplines, material specifications and Layer 2 & Layer 3 connectivity. The design drawings and specifications are clearly documented for collaborative reviews and refinement until a final design is agreed upon by all stakeholders. Final versions of the drawings and specifications are issued (IFB — Information for Bid) for inclusion into the bid package. This Design Development phase can be a follow-up procedure to the assessment and basis of design or a stand-alone request from a customer. Design criteria standards and typical drawings include:

  • Space requirements for rooms and pathways, both inside plant and outside plant
  • Applicable international standards and codes, construction methods, cabling products, rack and pathway products
  • Applicable approved parts list, termination and mounting methods, room construction and fit-out methods, and and MEP requirements
  • Pathway schematics for all backbone, horizontal, zone and distribution points
  • Telecommunication space requirements and rack elevations, as well as labeling/administration, bonding and grounding and firestopping requirements

Integrated Systems/Converged IT

During the design phase of the project, GPS conducts thorough analysis to determine if additional services can be integrated to run over the Layer 1 infrastructure and thus reduce the required number of installation steps and disparate cabling systems to offer both capital and operating cost savings. Some of the systems that GPS recommends be run across a common Layer 1 infrastructure include:

  • Security systems such as video surveillance an access control
  • Low-voltage digital LED lighting and control
  • Audiovisual applications
  • Building management systems such as HVAC
  • Fire detection (country and code specific)

Detailed Design Development Following Tender

Design changes often occur after the bid/tender process has completed, Siemon GPS works with the client and all interested parties to manage this change effectively, project costs can spiral without formal and controlled change management processes, Siemon GPS assist in the adherence to the client change management protocols to reduce budget increases and maintain client requirements.

Design changes are documented, and revisions made to specifications, and design drawings which are formally approved and signed off by the client – and a final “For Construction” pack issued to the installation company.

Changes following this final revision would usually then follow the agreed construction and client change management systems.
